October to March is ideal — the desert days are pleasantly warm and the evenings cool, perfect for exploring forts, palaces and city bazaars. The winter months also host Rajasthan's most colourful fairs and festivals.

A well-rounded first visit takes 5–7 days, covering two or three cities such as Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur. To include the desert (Jaisalmer) and wildlife (Ranthambore), plan for 9–12 days.
